Getting Started With Exercise: Some Tips for Beginners

Living a sedentary lifestyle can take a toll on our health. Among other things, it is a risk factor for obesity, which kills at least 2.8 million people every year. So it only makes sense to exercise regularly. In general, adults are advised to perform 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week; this can be broken down into around 30 minutes of exercise every day. But then again, getting yourself to start exercising regularly can be easier said than done. It is not impossible to start one, of course, and a few tips to help get you started can go a long way. Here are some of them.

Have the right mindset

It is highly probable that one of the things that got you to decide to exercise is social media. There is no shortage of people posting pictures of their fit bodies, and they do look good for sure. You compare yourself to them, and you feel like you have to keep up. If you begin exercising with this kind of mindset, however, chances are you will get frustrated along the way. And, when this happens, you don’t find the right motivation to push forward. In short, it is not sustainable; you’re not setting yourself up for long-term success.

Reframe the way you think about it instead. Look at it as a way to stay healthy and live your life to the fullest. You can start with reaching a goal as a motivation; you may want to lose weight or run a race. But the overarching goal should be staying healthy. And if that is embedded in your mind, you will always find the motivation to keep exercising. Additionally, being realistic is important; start with attainable steps.

Make it a habit

If you find yourself automatically reaching for your phone and browse through social media when you don’t have anything to do, then you have made it a habit, you do it without really thinking about it. And this is what should happen with your exercising. It should come automatically to you. One way to achieve this is by keeping an exercise routine. For instance, exercise at the same time every day, or make a schedule, and stick to it.

Moreover, when you exercise, remember to:

  • Warm up: Warming up before exercise prepares your body for the stress of exercise, helping prevent injuries and reduce soreness after exercise. If you’re planning to run, for example, walk slowly first.

  • Drink a lot of fluids: Staying hydrated during exercise helps you maintain your optimal performance. Hydrating after exercise is important; too, as it helps your body recovers.

  • Cool down: Doing so allows your body to go back to its normal state. Stretching and light walking are a couple of ways to cool down.

  • Maintain a balanced diet: Just because you’re exercising does not mean that you can forego having a healthy and balanced diet — the two should come together. A balanced diet will provide you with healthy energy levels that your body would surely require as you exercise.
