Tips for Losing Weight When You Sit at a Computer All Day

Losing weight is easier for some than others. This is especially true for people who have an active job. People who do property maintenance, deliver mail all day, or work construction don’t seem to have trouble with their weight because they’re burning hundreds of calories every day.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans have a desk job. Sitting at a desk all day is a recipe for disaster when it comes to gaining weight, but it doesn’t have to be.

You can actually lose weight when you sit at a computer all day. You just have to follow these tips.

Get a Wellness Coach

Losing weight on your own can be nearly impossible, especially if an office is your second home. Between the stress and wanting to crash on the couch at the end of a long day, many people find that online wellness coaching provides them with the encouragement they need to reach their weight loss goals.

Not only can a wellness coach provide you with diet and exercise plans that will keep you on track, they can also provide you with encouragement. They can remind you why you want to lose weight, and they can get you to go for that walk, even if you’ve had a particularly long day and you’d rather veg out in front of the TV.

Take Mini Breaks and Do Some Exercise

Whether you want to lose weight or not, sitting is extremely bad for your health. Not only can doing a little exercise at your desk make you feel better, it’s an easy way to burn a few extra calories.

  • Squeeze your glutes for five seconds every time you check an email
  • Straighten each leg under the desk so it’s parallel to the floor and flex your foot for five seconds
  • Do a couple of squats every time you return to your desk from a meeting or a break

If you can, get away from your desk altogether. Instead of browsing the internet on your phone during your break, take a lap around the office. Park at the back of the lot so you have a longer walk to the door, or spend 10 minutes of your lunch in the office workout room.

Be Smart About Snacks

It’s easy to eat when you sit at a desk, but it’s the fastest way to pack on the pounds. If you want to lose weight, you have to be smart about snacking.

Avoid the vending machine like the plague. Bring your own snacks instead, and only eat when you’re hungry.

Pay attention to what you drink too! Even diet soda can cause you to retain weight. Drink water as much as possible, and take less sugar and creamer in your coffee in the morning.

Losing weight can be a slow process when you sit at a desk all day. Take pride in the small victories so you don’t get discouraged. With diligence and patience, you can ensure that your career doesn’t compromise your health.
